- Jardim do Mar: The best surfing spot in Madeira. You will find it just a short drive from Funchal (30-40 minutes). While the waves are great for beginners, there are also some days when the ocean gets crazy and advanced surfers can get lucky. Stay safe and cautious in the waves get high.
- Ponta Pequena: It is a good surfing spot in Madeira, the waves are different depending on the weather. To get there, after you park your car in Jardim do Mar, you will need to have a 30-minute walk to reach there. Pay attention while walking and avoid any rocks falling from the cliffs. Some people prefer to go to Paul do Mar and take a 30 mins boat. it’s a fishing harbor and you can negotiate a return ride there, Make sure to take food and water with you as you won’t find any shops there.
- Paul do Mar: If you aren’t willing to do the extra effort to reach Ponta Pequena, Surfing in Paul do Mar can be a good idea. It’s not as good as Ponta Pequena but you can still enjoy your time and will have some shops around so you don’t need to bring your food. A recent tunnel has been built from Jardim do Mar to Paul do Mar, so it will be very easy now to reach there by car.

Surfing schools in Madeira offer lessons for beginners and advanced surfers. Lessons include board rental, wetsuits, and equipment. Centers are spread throughout the island, so you won’t have any trouble finding one near you.
We have booked and tried these surfing lessons and we recommend them. The tutors were friendly and they speak different languages. The equipment was included and it was a small group so it is better for beginners.
Surfing spots in Madeira near Funchal
- Funchal has a few beaches that are well-known for surfing. One of the best ones is Jardim do Mar, which is located right next to the city center and offers some great surf spots with both left and right breaks.
- There are more advanced waves in Ponta Pequena, Paul do Mar, and Fajã da Ovelha. Some of them are less accessible by car compared to Jardim do Mar, but they are worth the effort.
